Students will learn the fundamentals of turning a spindle on the lathe: which tools to use, how to sharpen you tools and how to approach the tool to the wood for a controlled cut. The class is designed for those with little to no prior experience and will teach a proper technique for wood turning. The instructor will emphasis safety and learning the basic skills of turning beads, coves and pommels to incorporate in to the spindle form. 

What to Wear

  • Comfortable clothing that you can get dirty in
  • No loose sleeves or  dangling jewelry
  • Hair should be tied back
  • No open shoes

We will provide:

  • Safety glasses and face shields
  • Tools
  • Wood 
  • Fun

Your instructor is Tye Putman. Tye has been a woodworker for most of his life. Over 20 years ago a job related injury to his shoulder made lifting furniture and cabinetry projects difficult, so he decided to try lathe work. He quickly found it to be addicting. and has become an accomplished turner who served as President for a local branch of the American Association of Wood Turners. He has learned from some leading artists including Jim Mathias of Three Rivers. He has hosted visiting artists at his home in Fresno and traveled to symposiums around the country. 


Select classes include a one month conditional membership to Ideaworks. This offer is only valid for classes $100 and over and only for new members. Your conditional membership starts on the last day of class and is only valid for the equipment used during class. This is a high demand event with limited spaces available. A request of cancellation must be received by email to classes@fresnoideaworks.org 72 Hours prior to the event date to be eligible for a refund. Please note, a $15.00 processing fee will be assessed per cancellation from the total refund.

Regretfully, we are unable to issue refunds and/or credit for a missed class. However, in some circumstances at the discretion of the instructor and management, pending availability, a credit may be given towards future sessions with special circumstances. 

In the case that Ideaworks must cancel a class, full registration fees based on the original form payment was made will be refunded.
