Only 12 weeks til Christmas! It’s time to shake up the Quilt Block Club and start using up our orphan blocks to create some little gifties. Attend any and all sessions (I’ve added two extras) at no additional cost, or $10.00 if you are a pay-as-you-go friend.

All materials beyond your blocks will be provided for the orphan blocks projects, but feel free to bring your own coordinating thread and zippers if you prefer.

    • October 4th - Zippered wallet/phone case: small to medium block, large enough to surround paper money or phone plus one inch all around.
    • October 4th - Zippered pouch: small to medium block.
    • October 18th - Trivet/hotpad/china cushion: any size block, to place beneath or between things that need cushioning
    • November 1st - Pie/casserole carrier: large block, plus sashing to increase size.
    • November 15th - Eyeglass case: small to medium block, large enough to surround glasses or phone plus one inch all around.
    • November 15th  - Appliqued dishtowel: any size block, to embellish a flour sack dish towel.
    • December 6th - Drawstring gift bag or wrist bag: any size blocks, two or four blocks with the same measurements to make a larger bag.

    Important Stuff:

    • All materials are provided, but if you have specific quilting fabrics you'd love to work with, bring them along!
    • Quilt Block Club is suitable for anyone familiar with simple straight stitching on a domestic sewing machine. It's a welcoming space for both beginners and seasoned quilters.
    • For our younger participants, minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for a shared creative experience.

    Safety First:

    • We're serious about safety. Closed-toed shoes are a must in all areas of the facility.
    • Avoid dangling jewelry, lanyards, and the like around machinery.
    • Keep hoodie and apron ties, long hair, and long beards securely away from the machines.
    • Dates are subject to change. We'll do our best to ensure that everyone has a chance to make every block.

Get ready to stitch, share, and create lasting memories with fellow quilting enthusiasts. Quilt Block Club 2025 is not just about crafting beautiful pieces; it's about embracing the joy of quilting in a welcoming and inspiring community. See you on the third Saturday!

This is an introductory course on how to use the CNC machine with an emphasis on safety. In this class, you will examine the entire work flow of the CNC process, learn how to import geometry, investigate certain editing techniques, and the necessary requirements to create the g-code for tool calibration.  This final process will include setting feed and speed, how to input specifications of the raw material, etc. Finally, students will be able learn how to setup the device, how to load and secure materials, and how to set the home position and run a simple job.  This introductory class does not include any Computer Aided Design (CAD) instruction.

Upon completion of this introductory class, students will have earned their Programming Level 1.  Programming Level 2 can be earned after running a minimum of 5 successful jobs while under instructor supervision.  This level includes programming and operation. Welcome to Lampwork Glass Art, where we're turning up the heat to create some incredible pieces! In this relaxed and hands-on class, we'll explore the basics of lampworking and send you home with something entrancing of your own making.

Get ready to play with fire and learn to make unique keepsakes and gifts for the holidays! In this beginner-friendly class I will demonstrate techniques for making several styles of borosilicate glass Christmas ornaments including icicles, teardrops, and candy canes. Students will learn how to melt and shape glass on an oxygen-propane torch and will have the opportunity to make several ornaments of their own. Ornaments will anneal in the kiln overnight and can be picked up the next day.
Students should bring a water bottle and wear natural fibers and closed-toed shoes.

        • In this 4 hour workshop we'll start with the do's and don'ts, throw on some safety glasses, and ensure our workspace is good to go.
        • Wondering what those colorful glass rods are all about? We'll take a look at the essential tools – torches, brass stamps, and shaping gear – that turn those rods into artistic wonders.
        • Your instructor, local artist Emily Johnsen, will showcase the craft – melting, shaping, and transforming glass into some seriously awesome shapes.
        • Then you’ll dive in! It's your turn to grab the torch (figuratively) and start crafting your own beginner-friendly project as you try the layering, mixing, shaping and stamping that will make your glass pieces stand out.
        • Finally, you’ll find out how to cool and anneal your pieces properly to keep them looking fantastic.

Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to hone your skills, this lampwork class is all about enjoying the process while crafting some impressive art. Let the fiery adventure begin!

        Important stuff:

        • No open toe shoes (anywhere in the facility)
        • Do not wear clothing made from synthetic or synthetic blends. Should an accident occur, synthetic fabric can burn vigorously, melt, and produce skin burns.
        • Long hair and beards must be securely tied back.
        • No lanyards, dangling jewelry, or loose sleeves.
        • Currently face masks are recommended but not required in the facility. A cotton cloth mask is safest around open flame. Your instructor will explain the safe use of face masks around torches.
        • Upon completion of the class, Ideaworks members may be certified to use the lampworking station unsupervised during business hours.

        We will provide:

        • Eye protection
        • Insulated sleeves
        • All tools and materials for class projects

NOTE: This class DOES NOT qualify for the free one-month conditional membership.

        Our Makerspace

Fresno's Maker community makes it's home at 1730 H Street in downtown Fresno, California, in the historic "Crown Plunge" building. Built in 1928 by Clyde and Lloyd Jackson and managed by Reg Dauner, the Crown Plunge was the longest-operating swimming pool in Fresno when it closed in 1847. After removing the tank and installing their printing and engraving business, the Crown Plunge building remained in the Jackson family until 2018, when Fresno Ideaworks agreed to purchase it and create a permanent home for Fresno Ideaworks. Since then we have worked diligently to maintain our comprehensive woodshop, "weldatorium", machine shop, tech classroom & hackerspace, ceramics studio, textiles & fiber arts studio, modern fabrications lab. The recent addition of a lampwork glass art station is only the first step toward creating new hand-craft and fine arts opportunities to round out our established industrial arts programs.

        LEARN

Ideaworks offers many opportunities to develop artistic and technical skills. What sets our community workshop apart is the accessibility to the collaborative knowledge of the diversity within our inclusive makerspace.

        CREATE

Ideaworks' comprehensive array of tools and equipment enables makers to bring their ideas into reality. Our community workshop empowers individuals by providing skills and inspiration. At Ideaworks creativity is not a competition.
